How to Find Tenders on eTenders: Mastering South Africa's National Portal
A step-by-step guide to searching, filtering, and downloading tender opportunities on the government's eTender publication portal.
The eTender Publication Portal (www.etenders.gov.za) is the official platform where all national, provincial, and municipal organs of state must advertise their bids. For any business serious about public sector work, proficiency in using this portal is not optional — it is the primary gateway to opportunities. Here is how to navigate it efficiently.
Getting started
Start by accessing the site and selecting Tender Opportunities on the home page. This opens a search interface with several filters. You do not need to log in or register to view and download tenders; the portal is entirely open to the public.
Filtering effectively
The most efficient search method is to use the Organ of State filter. Here you can select specific departments — such as “Gauteng: Department of Health” or “City of Cape Town” — and view all their active and archived notices.
If you serve a particular sector, use the Category filter, which divides procurement into goods, services, construction, and others. Unfortunately, subcategory filters are limited, so you often need to scan the short descriptions.
For more targeted monitoring, use the Closing Date filter. Set a date range from today to two weeks ahead to see urgent, closing-soon tenders, or widen the range to get a longer view.
The Place where goods, works or services are required filter allows you to narrow by province or municipality — very useful for SMMEs focusing locally.
Reading the results
Once you hit search, the results display key details: tender number, description, closing date, and the name of the organ of state. Click on the tender number to open the full advert page. This page contains the tender’s summary, contact persons, compulsory briefing information, and most importantly, the Documents section at the bottom.
Here you will find the complete bid pack in PDF or ZIP format. Download and save all files immediately. Some tender documents are large and may contain dozens of drawings or annexures. Use a high-speed connection and name the folders systematically on your computer, e.g., GautengHealth-123-2026-{date}.
A hidden feature: email alerts
Many miss this one: you can set up automatic email alerts. Register a free account on the portal using an email address and password. After logging in, navigate to My eTenders and configure your alert preferences by category, province, and keywords. The system will send you a daily or weekly email whenever a matching tender is published. This is invaluable for not missing brief-window opportunities.
Submission is separate
Remember that eTenders does not process submissions; it only advertises. Each tender document will state whether bids must be delivered physically, dropped into a tender box, or submitted through an online procurement system like the municipal e-procurement platform. Always verify the submission method and location from the official bid document, not just the advertisement.
Use the Awards section for intelligence
Check the Awards section of the portal. Studying who won previous similar tenders and at what price gives you market intelligence.
The eTender portal, used systematically, stops being a confusing maze and becomes a powerful radar, scrolling hundreds of potential contracts across your screen every morning.
